The cabinet of ministers, at a today’s meeting, approved a draft law on the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).

 

Under the draft, the most important amendments regard the decrease in the number of CSJ judges from 33 to 20; change of CSJ’s composition, through ensuring the access to the position of CSJ judge to representatives of other legal professions, such as lawyers, prosecutors, university professors from the law field; revision of CSJ’s competences, with emphasizing its basic role of unifying the judicial practice.  

 

„The CSJ reform is a vital one or without essential changes at the level of CSJ, the consolidation of independence, enhancement of the integrity and individual responsibility of judges are not possible to be promoted at the level of other courts of the judicial system,’’ Justice Minister  Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said.  

 

One of the goals of the draft law is to transform CSJ into the main authority due to focus on ensuring the uniform interpretation and enforcement of the legislation in the judicial system.   

 

The draft law was subjected to public consultations, approved and examined including by the Venice Commission and will result in the improvement of the quality of the justice act, ensuring the appointment of impartial and just judges in CSJ, enhancing the citizens’ trust in the judicial system.
