Over 338 thousand inhabitants from the Transnistrian region hold the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, of which over 313 thousand hold national biometric passports

According to evidences from databases managed by the Public Services Agency, a number of 347 251 inhabitants of the left bank of river Nistru and Bender municipality are registered in the State Population Register, of which 338 008 hold the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, including 313 006 who own passports of the citizen of Republic of Moldova and 281 498 identity cards.
In the last 10 years the biggest annual number of requests for biometric passports was in 2018 (37 560), and of identity cards in 2019 (20 309), compared to 12 143 passports and 14 879 identity cards in 2013, and in 2020, following restrictions imposed to free circulation by Tiraspol, the number of requests significantly diminished (17 391 passports and 9 673 identity cards).
It is to notice that, as a result of simplification of the procedure to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by recognition for persons born on the territory of the country and aged below 18 (legislative amendments in force from 19.04.2018), a procedure which takes place beginning with the date of expression of written agreement and based on marital status documents attesting births on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, in the period April 19, 2018 – November 30, 2021, 24 055 persons were recognized as citizens of the country, out of which 16 367 (over 68%) are inhabitants of the left bank of river Nistru and Bender municipality.
In the period January – November 2021 a number of 7348 marital status documents released as a result of certification were issued for the inhabitants in the region (in 2020 – 5570).
