At the weekly meeting of the Joint Control Commission on 28 January in Bender, the Delegation of the Republic of Moldova again called on the parties to examine, take action and identify solutions to the acute problems that continue to endanger the situation in the Security Zone and affect the existing mechanisms of the peacekeeping mission.
The inadmissibility of provocative actions by the enforcement bodies subordinated to Tiraspol were reiterated, specifically abduction of citizens, abusive installation of the “border guards” posts, and exposure of firearms within public demonstrations.
In order to streamline the functioning of the Joint Military Command and to eliminate divergences in the military observers’ activity, it has been repeatedly proposed to initiate the drafting of a single document that would encompass all the existing instructions and regulations.
Unfortunately, the representatives from Tiraspol have not changed their destructive approach for a long time. They rejected not only the arguments of the Chisinau Delegation, but even a compromise initiative proposed by the representatives of the Russian Federation, which could help unblock the processes of documenting the checkpoints in the Security Zone.
The representative of Ukraine was the one who supported the list of topics proposed for discussion. He characterized the peacekeeping mechanism on the Nistru river as dysfunctional, given the inability to eliminate the illegal checkpoints and to ensure respect for fundamental human rights within the perimeter of the Security Zone.
The Transnistrian side again blocked the opening of the meeting by not accepting the agenda. However, while openly challenging the basic acts of the peacekeeping mission, the Transnistrian Delegation seeks to manipulate the public opinion and blame anyone for the prolonged failure of the Joint Control Commission’s meetings and for compromising the existing peacekeeping mechanism.
