Sweden reiterates its steadfast support for Moldova's European aspirations

During the meeting between Ghenadie Marian, head of the Burea for European Integration (BIE), and a Swedish delegation from the Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Reform Support Unit of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held in Chisinau, the main focus was on enhancing the capacities of the BIE and its competencies, as well as bolstering institutional efforts in Moldova's journey towards European Union accession.

 

The Swedish officials from Stockholm reaffirmed Sweden's unwavering support for Moldova's European trajectory, considering Moldova as an integral part of Sweden's regional development strategy. The discussions, conducted on 7th March, also involved Katarina Martholm Fired, Ambassador of Sweden in Chisinau, and Axel Lundell, Secretary II at the Embassy.

 

The parties emphasized the significance of reinforcing the institutional capacities of the BEI, particularly in terms of human and financial resources. Additionally, there were deliberations on the requirements of working groups involving foreign experts to facilitate the harmonization process of national legislation with that of the European Union during the negotiation phase.

 

Ghenadie Marian highlighted that the Bureau's ongoing efforts are directed towards orchestrating the implementation of requisite actions aimed at advancing towards the commencement of accession negotiations. Additionally, he mentioned the finalization of the mechanism for inter-institutional coordination of the European integration process and the structuring of the negotiating team as current focal points. "The Bureau for European Integration requires support to effectively fulfill its institutional mandates, and Sweden's assistance would be greatly valued," underscored the Head of the BIE.

 

Daniel Johansson Arhem, Head of the Reform Support Unit, commended Moldova's strides in enacting essential reforms, which played a pivotal role in garnering the European Council's favorable decision in December 2023 to initiate EU accession negotiations.
