Detailed aspects on relevant activities that can be planned for the implementation of the project ‘Building sustainable and inclusive peace, strengthening trust and social cohesion in Moldova’ were discussed during a meeting of the Head of the Reintegration Policies Bureau Alin Gvidiani and the head of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Moldova Bea Ferenci, with attendance of the Bureau’s team and experts from OHCHR, UN Women and UNDP.
It should be recalled that on August 24,2022, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, the Resident Coordinator and the heads of United Nations agencies in Moldova (UNDP, UN Women, OHCHR) signed the Agreement on the implementation of the project, which provides for the deepening of interaction on thematic areas between experts, professionals and representatives of the associative environment from the both banks of the Nistru river in order to strengthen peace, solidarity, democratic values and human rights.
The Bureau has proposed to strategically focus on the human rights situation in the Transnistrian region, which is very complicated, mobilizing efforts to intervene with all forms of national and international assistance to ensure observance for universally guaranteed rights and freedoms, rehabilitation of victims, legal counselling of applicants, protection of the rights of ethnic minorities, promotion of gender equality, etc.
Also, the active contribution of the UN was suggested for strengthening the capacities of the Bureau by offering external professional development trainings and exchanges of positive experiences, organizing study visits to the UN and its agencies' headquarters, filling out the agenda of the sectoral working groups within the Transnistrian settlement process with new topics for discussion from the perspective of promoting confidence-building measures, as well as training local public authorities from the Security Zone with a view to effectively accessing external assistance funds and implementing projects with a major impact at community level.
The need was reiterated to coordinate with the Bureau the planned measures and activities in the eastern districts of the country, to respect the commitments agreed with the Moldovan authorities, to avoid direct partnerships with structures not empowered by law and to bring substantial added value to the projects implemented to complete the objectives of reintegration of the country and peaceful and sustainable settlement of the Transnistrian issue.
