Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian held an online meeting on October 18, 2022 with the Special Representative of Ukraine for the Transnistrian Settlement, Yurii Klimenko.
The officials exchanged information and views on a wide range of issues related to the Transnistrian issue, as well as informed each other about the activities carried out, including the Deputy Prime Minister’s recent visits in Berlin and in Brussels. The Deputy Prime Minister informed Ambassador Klimenko that following the discussions with his German interlocutors in Berlin the thematic international conference on Transnistrian conflict settlement will not be held this year but they hope that the regional situation will take a better dynamic that would enable them to return to the initiative of holding the event. Similarly, the current regional environment does not make it possible to relaunch the ‘5+2’ format; instead, the dialogue in the ‘1+1’ format takes place periodically and the sectoral working groups meet more frequently.
Special Representative of Ukraine informed the Deputy Prime Minister about the position of Ukraine ahead of the traditional OSCE Ministerial Council in early December. Yurii Klimenko also noted that the Ukrainian position had been communicated to the Special Representative of the OSCE to the Transnistrian settlement, Thomas Mayr-Harting during his visit in Kyiv. This is especially important ahead of the upcoming visit of Mr. Mayr-Harting in Chisinau.
Deputy Prime Minister Serebrian mentioned that the efforts towards reintegration of Moldova need to be harmonized with the dynamic European integration process of the country.
The officials confirmed their commitment to continue their productive dialogue on issues of the Transnistrian settlement and the regional situation.
