18th June 2024, Chisinau - Italy has expressed its unequivocal support for Moldova's accession to the European Union. This endorsement was formalised today in Chisinau with the signing of a Joint Declaration by the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Edmondo Cirielli. The ceremony took place in the presence of Presidents Maia Sandu and Sergio Mattarella, during the Italian official's visit to Moldova.

This declaration marks the first instance of the Italian Government explicitly supporting a candidate country for EU membership. Italy reaffirms that Moldova's integration into the European framework will yield mutual benefits, fostering investment and trade and enhancing cooperation in political, social, and cultural domains.

"The enlargement of the European Union is an investment in peace, security, stability, and prosperity. Italy recognises Moldova's increasing contribution to regional and European security. We are committed to deepening our bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, security, education, and cultural exchanges, further strengthening the ties between our peoples", the Joint Declaration states.

"We greatly appreciate and are grateful for this demonstration of solidarity and friendship from a founding member state of the EU, which also hosts the largest community of Moldovan citizens in Europe. We will continue to strive to meet all the accession criteria and bring the Republic of Moldova into the larger European family", said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov.
