5 February 2025, Chișinău - EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has made her first visit to the Republic of Moldova since taking office on 1 December 2024. To mark this occasion, the Bureau for European Integration, in partnership with the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE), organised a meeting with members of working groups and civil society, academia and business representatives, local mayors, but also all those people directly involved in the realisation of the accession agenda.

The event - EU Accession Dialogue with Marta Kos - has offered a great platform for constructive discussions on key reforms and EU support for our country on its European path.

'Exactly one year ago, on 7th February, we had our first meeting in Brussels on the explanatory screening. A lot of work has been done throughout the whole year, but we are determined to continue this long and complex process of preparing the country, the economy and the whole society for accession. By keeping working together, we will succeed in achieving this ambitious goal - Moldova's accession to the EU - and making from it a reality. Such historic opportunities are rare', said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov at the opening of the event.

In her turn, Commissioner Marta Kos underlined the European Union's determination to support Moldova in the broad process of transformation and advancement on the path towards the EU.

'When Slovenia, my home country, became an EU member on 1 May 2004, it was one of the happiest days of my life. We knew that we were part of Europe. The hope, the opportunities and the vision of a peaceful and prosperous future guided us then, and membership of the European Union was and is extremely important. I know that this feeling of belonging is shared by the Moldovan people. Despite all the difficulties, you have anchored your European future in the constitution, and I want to help you to reach it’, mentioned Marta Kos.

In this context, the Commissioner for Enlargement stated that she hopes our country will open negotiations on as many clusters as possible during the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union - in the first part of this year, and the Danish presidency - in the second half of 2025: 'You can count on me to support your European path in Brussels, but I can only do so if you continue to advance in implementing reforms. It is not an easy process, but if you deliver results, I will do everything I am able to in order to support your efforts'.

Participants at the dialog shared their thoughts on the current challenges the Republic of Moldova is facing, including the energy crisis and misinformation, but also on how local authorities, social stakeholders and each citizen can be involved in promoting European values.
