Cristina Gherasimov, after the European Council meeting: ‘It is an important signal that, on its European path, Moldova enjoys the full support of all 27 EU Member States’

The 27 leaders of the European Union, meeting yesterday at the European Council, reaffirmed the EU's strong support for Moldova's European path and congratulated our country on the pace of accession-related reforms. They invited the Council to move to the next stage in the negotiation process, emphasizing that Moldova is ready to open the first group of chapters on fundamentas.

 

‘This is an unprecedented recognition of our efforts and an important signal that, on its European path, Moldova enjoys the full support of all 27 EU member states’, said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov.

 

Text of the European Council Conclusions on the Republic of Moldova:

 

- The European Council looks forward to the first Republic of Moldova-EU Summit, which will take place on 4 July 2025, and reiterates the European Union's strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, resilience, and economic development of the Republic of Moldova. The European Union will continue to work closely with the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the resilience and stability of this country, which faces persistent destabilising activities by Russia, including hybrid attacks aimed at undermining the country's democratic institutions.

 

- The European Council reiterates the European Union's strong support for the Republic of Moldova in its accession process. The European Council congratulates the Republic of Moldova on the pace of its accession-related reforms, welcomes the significant progress made, and encourages the Republic of Moldova and the Commission to intensify their work in the accession process. The 27 Member States invite the Council to move to the next stage in the accession process, based on merit, when all conditions are met. The European Council takes note of the Commission's assessment that Cluster 1, on fundamentals, is ready to be opened.
