The approval of the new coordination mechanism for the EU accession process and the establishment and operational framework of the negotiating team marks significant milestones in Moldova's path towards European integration

13th March 2024, Chisinau - The Cabinet of Ministers approved today a new mechanism for coordinating Moldova's EU accession process, as well as the organisation and functioning of the negotiating team. This decision reflects the transition of the Republic of Moldova to a new stage in its relationship with the European Union, following the historic decision of the European Council in December 2023 to open accession negotiations with our country.

 

The Government Decision sets out an updated framework for the coordination of EU accession and outlines the organisation and functioning of the negotiating team.

The negotiating team will include: 

- Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration/Chief Negotiator;

- Deputy Chief Negotiator;

- the Secretary General of the Government;

- the Government Secretary of State for European Integration;

- Head of the European Integration Bureau;

- Head of the Centre for Harmonisation of Legislation;

- the representative of the National Bank of Moldova;

- the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;

- Ambassador, Head of the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union;

- the representative of the Ministry of Finance;

- the representative of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitisation;

- the representative of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development;

- the representative of the Ministry of Environment;

- the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry;

- national expert in the economic field;

- national expert in the field of justice and anti-corruption.

 

If necessary, the negotiating team may be supplemented by civil servants and independent experts.

Other key elements include:

- the role of the National Commission for European Integration in providing strategic coordination of the negotiation process;

- consulting Parliament on current developments and coordinating negotiating positions;

- the examination and approval of negotiating positions by the Government;

- providing secretariat support to the negotiating team by the Bureau for European Integration.
